[Wactclc-alma] [EXTERNAL] - New Alma feature for restricting digital access

I wonder if we could use this to allow only library staff access to web versions of some of our print subscriptions such as our local newspaper, Chronicle of Higher Ed., etc. Our single print subs for titles like those allow us a single individual web login, which we only share internally in case we need to use it to help students, but we don't give out the login credentials directly to students or other employees. Does it allow you to enter the username and password for that link that would pass you straight through?

Also, our nursing department pays for annual individual student licenses for UpToDate. I bowed out of managing that subscription because it wasn't for the entire campus, but perhaps this is an option we could consider for that scenario...

Subject: [EXTERNAL] - [Wactclc-alma] New Alma feature for restricting digital access

CAUTION: This email came from a non-OC system or external source. Beware of phishing and social engineering!

A new feature in the Alma August release allows set up of a restricted access queue for digital content, either a digital object (like a PDF) uploaded to Alma, or an otherwise hidden link to a digital object stored elsewhere.

This feature would be handy in a use-case where you have purchased restricted access (example: 3 concurrent users) for some special use content that doesn't come with its own way of restricting access.

I don't know if this scenario exists. But I could imagine it occurring when you buy some content from a smaller publisher (like someone publishing trade-oriented textbooks) that doesn't maintain its own authorization system.

And it does appear that you can limit access by user group or User ID. So, if you had a set of user IDs of people in a particular class, you could limit content access to those users.

I'm not sure if anyone might have an applicable scenario for this feature. But since this is novel functionality not previously present in Alma, I thought it was worth a mention.

One use of this feature might simply to be restrict access to subscription content so that you can advocate for pricing from a vendor based on a restricted set of users with access to content.
