Just a quick FYI... all the Gale SDL academic offerings do have counterparts in the Alma CZ, and the names are quite consistent between the two, which hasn’t always been the case with Gale collections in the CZ.

And based on a quick glance, they all appear to have full text availability.

I'll run an analytics report later to capture additional info on these collections, like # of journals included in the CZ, and maybe a complete journal list of all journals included in the SDL packages (again, from the perspective of the CZ, rather than Gale directly).

​I have seen how Gale does this in Florida.  They are essentially the state's Florida Electronic Library. When accessing from an IP in Florida, Gale's databases are available to you. The move was a lobbying effort that did not include academic level needs and requirements.


I see Opposing Viewpoints isn't on the list, but Global Issues has been pulling the same stats at BBCC. The Lit one is also not on the list and can be about $11,000 stand alone based on FTE.


Frankly, I am having a sort of melt down on the entire concept of lit crit databases as costly archaic monsters that don't remotely support current ways faculty teach literature. Yes. Monsters. They are the children of print anthologies that reflected last centuries pedagogies. In short, that's how my month is going.


I am not a fan of Gale products and our usage of Proquest in easily triple the Gale databases we have.


So, in Washington, does this mean my Gale expenditures are now picked up by the state and that budget is freed up to secure stronger, relevant resources?


I had a meeting on Monday with Gale trying to bust up the Access package into something meaningful.


So, that's the heat you are feeling about my response to this announcement.


A particularly piquant and enjoyable part of the conversation was how Gale usage was a reflection of my lack of knowledge and skill in managing their product. Nicely, of course. Nicely.

I second discussing this at one or more Thursday calls.  I am concerned about a potential loss of full text scholarly journal and newspaper titles, and hope to be able to do some title comparisons between the databases later today.

I am very curious about integration with Alma (lots of sub-collections in the Gale proposal) and also what everyone might be thinking regarding Proquest.
