[Wactclc-alma] [EXTERNAL*]-Re: [External] Online textbooks & reserves during COVID-19

I did get it to work for me. I was able to log in with my student account and add the Bittinger Pre Algebra text to my shelf and can read it...

They must not know that Skagit is a quarter-long school...

Did anyone get this to work? When I tried to create an account, it told me that I was not in a semester school and therefore not eligible. :(

Grays Harbor College was on the drop-down list, but then it said no.

I was able to create an account with my staff email, and as you said, my school (LCC) was listed. I’m nervous about the disclaimer note though since we are not a semester-based school:

Note: This free eBook offer applies strictly to students from nonprofit, semester-based colleges and universities. Students from schools that do not meet that criteria may have their eBook access revoked following the checkout process.

I just checked the Redshelf list of eligible colleges and it looks like most of our colleges are included. It requires students to create an account, and identify their school (Skagit Valley College did appear) and apparently it knows if it's an employee or a student email address (I could create an account with my student email, but not my faculty email address). They can then add up to 7 titles to their "Bookshelf." Depending on the titles, portions of the book may be copied or printed (for example, Bittinger's Pre Algebra says 20% can be printed), so we may want to suggest that they save printing and/or saving options for the readings that occur in the latter part of the quarter.

May 25 will take us through most of the quarter, but it would be nice if they could extend it through part of June...

Nice work Amy and Kirsti.

And couple of follow up thoughts…

If you find an open textbook, or a temporarily available for free textbook, one option would be to create a title record and portfolio in Alma, so that you could make the title available in course reserves or in a local collection in Primo.

Remember all the discussions we had, and the presentation Dan Moore, Edmonds gave<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Aoivfnmt7kweI9nE23vqRTbQ_j91AOoVNLBtx_j3D9s/edit?usp=sharing>, about setting up local collections in Primo? Those records with links could then be put in a special local collection to highlight in Primo.

My second thought… there are open access textbook and book collections in Alma CZ and PCI ready for activation.

One of them is OAPEN<http://www.oapen.org/home> in the CZ. Also in the CZ is DOAB Directory of Open Access Books<https://www.doabooks.org/>. In the PCI, you can find Openstax<https://openstax.org/> and UMN Center for Open Education<https://open.umn.edu/opentextbooks>.

These might be worth activating for this period of remote instruction. Doing so would allow librarians and faculty to search Primo directly for some of the available open access textbooks that exist in some of the better curated collections.

I found Bedford Researcher on there yesterday for one of our faculty. The website says books are available for free through 5/25, as they seem to be serving semester schools. Hopefully they will extend that til June for quarter schools...

In just the past 2 days, a bunch of publishers have been announcing that they'll be *temporarily* making a bunch of textbooks and ebooks available online for free.

Our Reserves folks are using Alma Analytics to report on our most heavily-used reserves, and then checking publisher websites to find out if students can get those textbooks for free online. Maggie Argiro (Circ Manager at South) says many of our textbooks are now available via a publisher platform called RedShelf.
https://studentresponse.redshelf.com/

McGraw-Hill, Pearson, and Cengage are other textbook publishers that we know are making some textbooks temporarily available for free.

As we find these, we're saving direct links into a shared spreadsheet.

We plan to share some of these links with instructors directly. We're also considering adding ultra-brief bib records and portfolios for these temporarily-free online textbooks to Alma where we can (and deleting them after all this is over). We'll be working on this more next week and I can share what we come up with to this list if it would be helpful.

It will be ok!
