My best info shows the following institutions having a Kanopy subscription of some type, and may not be (and probably isn't') 100% accurate:

Bellevue
Edmonds
Green River
Renton
Pierce
Shoreline

The best approach would be for those institutions with current Kanopy subscriptions to approach Kanopy as a consortium to express their concerns.

And possibly to negotiate a group contract with more favorable pricing.

The latter would potentially mean agreeing on a package, terms, and subscription length (like committing for x number of years).

Once the currently active Kanopy subscribed reached a deal, the contract could potentially be opened to other participants.

If those of you with active Kanopy subscriptions think that approach is viable, I can email those directors directly and suggest that approach.

To move the conversation forward from that point would then require time and involvement from people at the subscribing institutions to make something happen.

I heard that last week too, when I inquired why were billed $2/view for 165 plays rather than automatically triggering a purchase after 50 plays. They said "This is something we can no longer offer." I had received no advance notification of any changes to the billing structure. I sent a response back expressing my unhappiness, and attached a copy of the email we had from the sales rep a couple of months ago offering that model to us, which is part of what convinced is to adopt the service, but have yet to hear back. I am all for pressuring Kanopy via consortium or other means, at least to allow that model to remain in place for the rest of this year.

Hi all,

Long time, no see. ;)

I wasn't sure if this was best to post here or CLAMS or CLAWS, so I'll start with this list.

Another librarian and I met with our new Kanopy rep yesterday. Has anyone else met with Nicole Ojeda? She shared with us that Kanopy is making some pricing changes such as charging less than $120 per film for short films or episodes in the PDA model. She also shared that in the PPU model, hitting 60 $2 plays will no longer trigger a purchase. Meaning our top watched film at Pierce would cost us $800 already and keep going as more students watch it, rather than capping out $120. Finally, she shared that we weren't really supposed to be on PPU model because we aren't a public library.

This info has us in a bit of a tizzy!

Has anyone else heard something different? Is Kanopy something we need to take on as a consortium?

Thanks for your thoughts!
Lesley
