[Wactclc-alma] Import Profile Encoding Format

Lynn,

You're right that ISO8859_1 is an old and outdated encoding standard. The encoding standard controls how diacritics display.

There was a big change to international computing standards sometime in the 2000s that allowed people to type and display diacritics (like: ä ô ñ) and symbols (like: 我 北) used in non-English languages.

MARC records that use the old ISO8859_1 encoding standard don't display modern diacritics correctly. MARC records that use the newer UTF-8 encoding standard do display modern diacritics correctly.

If you have any non-English titles in your catalog or if you have any author names that contain diacritics in your catalog-- including in table of contents notes!-- then you need to make sure your MARC records are using the UTF-8 encoding standard.

When you export records from OCLC in Connexion Client, there's a place where you need to set the encoding. Under Tools > Options > Export tab > Record Characteristics make sure the Character Set field is set as "UTF-8 Unicode"

Then make sure that any Import Profile you use to import OCLC records in Alma, under the Profile Details tab, you have the following settings:
               Physical source format : Binary
               Encoding format: UTF-8
               Source format: MARC21 Bibliographic

If you're exporting records from OCLC Connexion Browser, you can't ever export MARC records with UTF-8 encoding, so you should never, ever export MARC records via OCLC Connexion Browser.

If you take a look at your Connexion Client settings, and discover you've been exporting from Connexion with the UTF-8 encoding, but importing the same records into Alma with the ISO8859_1 encoding, then you really need to re-import the MARC records to fix the encoding errors.

Hope this helps.

Hi Kirsti and Wade and All,

The bibs for Films On Demand come from Infobase and I used UTF-8 in the import profile and the job was successful.

The bibs for all my other items come from OCLC and I use ISO8859_1 in the import profile and this works.

So, yes Kirsti, maybe where the bibs come from is key. But I’m still confused about using the ISO885_1. Maybe as long as everything is working, I should not question it.

Thanks,
Lynn

Lynn,

Where are you getting the Films On Demand MARC records from before you import them into Alma?

Subject: [Wactclc-alma] Import Profile Encoding Format

Hello All,

I’m having a problem with my encoding format. I am currently using ISO8859_1 in my import profile (and have been for years) and upon import, all the diacritics in my bib records display correctly. When I change the encoding format to UTF-8 and run an import, the diacritics display as black diamonds.

I thought the 8859_1 was outdated and no longer used and that I should be using UTF-8, so what I am doing is opposite of what I think to be true.

My objective is to import a file of Films on Demand streaming video bibs and I was told to use UTF-8 in my import profile.

I’m looking for some help with this library puzzler of the day!

Thank you,
Lynn
