[Wactclc-alma] Changing material type in Primo

Thanks, Kirsti. This is good information. I was able to make those fixes in the bib records and create a local resource type, but I used our 690 local subject heading of SVC Art to create it, so it wasn’t hard.

Thanks, again, all for your help!

Piggy-backing on what Naoko says, you may be able to create specific resource types for the type of artwork once you fix your bib records..

There are 2 fixed field codes you'll need to use:

1) Type of record
In Connexion (i.e. OCLC Bibliographic Formats and Standards), this is the Fixed Field "Type." In Alma (i.e. MARC Format 21 for Bibliograpic Data) this is in the LDR, Character position 6

k - Two-dimensional nonprojectable graphic
r - Three-dimensional artifact or naturally occurring object

My understanding is that "k" is used for things like paintings on canvas/wood/some other flat surface, along with posters, postcards and photographs.

2) Type of material
In Connexion, this is the Fixed Field "TMat." In Alma, this is in the 008 field, Character position 33

a - Art original
c - Art reproduction

For additional codes that may apply, see http://www.loc.gov/marc/bibliographic/bd008v.html

If you're updating these bib records anyway, consider making sure they all have a 366 field with one of the following:

still image
three-dimensional form

If you're using the code for "Art original" in the 008, then you can configure a Local Resource Type so all the records with that code show up as "Art work" (or whatever phrase you decide to use).

It looks like it's possible to combine data from multiple MARC fields when configuring a Local Resource Type as long as you check the "Use Regular Expression" option.

If you want to differentiate between art that's a painting vs. sculpture (I don't know what you have in your collection), you can follow Naoko's suggestion to create a Local Resource Type based on a combination of the LDR/008/336.

If you want to get *really* specific, figure out what you have in the 300$a fields for your art works and set up a Local Resource Type based on a combination of the LDR/008 and 300$a

Hi Elena,

You can create a local resource type:

Configuring Local Resource Types for Primo VE
https://knowledge.exlibrisgroup.com/Primo/Product_Documentation/020Primo_VE/025Display_Configuration/050Configuring_Local_Resource_Types_for_Primo_VE<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fknowledge.exlibrisgroup.com%2FPrimo%2FProduct_Documentation%2F020Primo_VE%2F025Display_Configuration%2F050Configuring_Local_Resource_Types_for_Primo_VE&data=02%7C01%7C%7C2f4d17af395a46d7cff808d7b0f276f5%7C02d8ff38d7114e31a9156cb5cff788df%7C0%7C0%7C637172427741497893&sdata=wixBUtCSt8VwQ4DGBHm%2BahYlMUZ%2Fn9zqpSHp6H4tlsU%3D&reserved=0>

I created a local resource type “3-D Objects” using the 336 field:

In this case, as long as the 336 field has the subfield $a "three-dimensional form", the material type shows up as 3-D object in Primo.

I admit “3-D object” is not the best term, but I borrowed it from Orbis Cascade Alliance.

I don’t know how to change the icon and would love to find out if anyone has done it!

So, we have a large collection of art and most of them, when they transferred over from Millennium, transferred over as if they were not art, but books. The information in the LDR 6 for Type of Record was incorrect. I am trying to figure out a normalization rule to change over all of these records so that the material type in Primo shows up correctly, and I think I can figure that one out by searching to see if there are any other normalization rules that change out the LDR information in records, so I’m not worried about that yet.

However, how the item displays in Primo is really stumping me. I experimented with changing the LDR information in Alma on one of the pieces and it shows up in Alma as Visual material now, but in Primo it shows up as “Other.” Is there a way to change that in Primo to be more descriptive and to say Visual Material? Also, is there any way I can change the icon in Primo that will indicate an artwork, instead of that generic paper icon that is there? Thanks for any ideas…
