[Wactclc-alma] Holds not popping up when item returned

Also, I cannot see anything in a pick list right now, because I cannot log in to Alma. Several other staff also cannot.
I’m not sure where the issue is, we are starting with our IT department, in case it’s a login credentials issue.
Any other suggestions?
Adrienne

Adrienne,

Actually, I believe there is a hack to this that allows you to keep both descriptions *and* any-item holds.

If you leave at least one of the items *without* a description field, then when selecting the specific “volume” (ie, Description) to place a hold on, you can select ALL.

Doing so will create a request not tied to a specific item, ie a specific Chromebook.

It appears that GHC does already have Chromebook items with no description, so I just placed that kind of request. It should now show up in your Pick-up from Shelf list.

I realize now that the cause of your original question, about pop-up up return of item to fill a hold, may simply be that you already have another Chromebook on the shelf to fill that hold. In that case, I don’t think the pop-up would appear, since an item to fill the hold was already sitting on the shelf.

The pop-up *would* appear if someone created a volume/description level request for the specific Chromebook being returned.

So, my suggestions for now would be to:

1. Keep your existing Description fields in place

2. Leave the Description field blank for at least one Chromebook

3. Instruct staff, when placing a hold on a Chromebook, to always select *All* under description.

4. Finally, be aware that in this scenario, a pop-up will only occur if a Chromebook hold exists, and there are not currently any Chromebooks available on the shelf.

Adding any of the enum or chron fields automatically generates a description field based on them.

So, off-label use of those fields won’t work.

What is the specific use-case or reason that requires that the items appear in a particular order in item display, since they are all equivalent in terms of purpose?

I ask because there be a different approach to what you are trying to achieve.

Hi again,
Will any of these fields:
Enumeration A (volume)
Enumeration B (issue)
Enumeration C (part)

Cause the hold problem we are currently having? If not, we will switch to using one of them.
Thanks,
Adrienne

Right now, you have some Chromebooks with a value in ‘Description’ (which analogous to a specific issue for serials). And some Chromebooks without a description.

Since some Chromebooks have a description, submitting a request requires specifying a specific Chromebook “issue” to fill the request.

So, only that specific Chromebook can fill that specific hold.

To change that behavior, remove the value of the ‘Description’ field from all Chromebook item records. (You appear to be using call number field as well from Chromebook IDs and or S/Ns, so the description appears just to be a duplicate)

Once you do that, any Chromebook can fulfill a hold on the ‘Chromebook’ title.

But be aware, that will affect the visual sorting of items. I believe you started using the Description field for Chromebooks to improve visual sorting of Chromebook item records.

I’m not aware of any way to affect both the any-item hold and the visual sorting of the items by some ID #. The sort routine configuration in Alma<https://knowledge.exlibrisgroup.com/Alma/Product_Documentation/010Alma_Online_Help_(English)/040Resource_Management/080Configuring_Resource_Management/170Configuring_Physical_Item_Sort_Routines#To+create+new+item+sort+routines> only supports item sorting on the following fields, none of which really help in this case:

Chronology I (year)
Chronology J (month)
Chronology K (day)
Description
Enumeration A (volume)
Enumeration B (issue)
Enumeration C (part)
Library
Location
Material type – This field is applicable only to the list of items that appear in the staff search physical items list.
Receiving date
Temporary location

Adrienne,

We create suppressed test, bib, holdings, and item records for every location we've got. We also have test patron records with library staff email addresses for every user group we've got. This was a trick I picked up from Nancy Nathansen at the University of Oregon and it's been really helpful for troubleshooting this kind of stuff.

I know this doesn't help with the pop-up message problem :) but maybe if you created a few test item records on a suppressed holdings record, you could place holds on them for testing purposes?

It will be ok!

Hi,
I’m having trouble with holds on our chromebooks. Placing holds works, but when one is returned and scanned in, there is no ‘pop up’ telling us that there’s a hold on it.
I’ve looking around and cannot find where/how to correct this.
Any help is appreciated. I could (maybe?) provide more details if needed. Ours are all checked out right now, with one on the holds shelf so we don’t have a bunch hanging around to experiment with, sadly.
Thanks,
Adrienne
