[Wactclc-alma] Terms of Use - conditional loan period

Hi all,

This is similar to Tammy’s question. We have cameras going out for 3 days. The Alma calendar shows us being closed Saturday and Sunday.

So, when we checkout a camera on Thursdays, they come back due Monday. We have Due Date Management set to Move to the end of the next open day
Due Date Management

How to manage fulfillment activities when the library is closed. The available values are:
o Keep – Keep the current due date and time
o Move backward – Move to the library closing time on the previous open day
o Move forward – Move to the library opening time on the next open day
o Move to the end of the next open day – Move to the library's closing time on the next open day (affects due dates that would otherwise fall on a day that the library is closed).
o Move to next open day (same hour) - The due date is set to the next open date with the original due date time.
o Move to previous open day (same hour) - The due date is set to the previous open date with the original due date time.
o When a due time is specified as part of the Due Date policy, if the due date is an open day, the Closed Library Due Date Management policy is ignored. If the due date is not an open day, the Closed Library Due Date Management policy is applied.

However, our circ staff wants it to go out for three OPEN days, meaning the due date for Thursday would be Tuesday (Friday would be Wednesday, etc.)

Is that possible?
-Lesley

Wade, increasing the circulation period policy will just shift the need to manually change due dates to an earlier check out day in the week. But thank you for thinking about our problem.

Tammy,

What about just extending the regular circulation period policy on these items by 1 day?

That would save on the overhead of setting due dates manually, and also avoid what is (technically, at least) a service inequity, based on the day you check something out.

The cameras belong to the Photography program. We are just the circulation point. It is the Photography program that wants students to have the cameras over the weekend. Sundays are excellent days for practicing with a high-end digital camera. Similarly our BAS Teacher Education program just bought some video cameras for student teachers to use that will be circulated through our media center for 3 days at a time. That program has also asked that the equipment not be due on Sunday. I think the main issue is that because there are no classes on Sunday, their students shouldn’t be required to come to campus just to return equipment. It isn’t an issue with our student laptops because those check out for 7 days. If a student checks one out on Sunday, then it is due the next Sunday.

We will just go with manually changing the due dates. ☺

Yeah. This is one of those things, like patron expiration dates, that Alma is really strict about.

If you say that your library is open, then you're telling Alma that you're providing circulation services to check things in and out. There's no automated way to prevent a due date from falling on an open day. If you tell Alma you're open, but you don't want something to have a due date on that open day, your only option is to manually change due dates when you check something out.

Why does the Media Center not want digital cameras due back on Sundays?

Kirsti

Hi, Kirsti,

We already have our Media Center as a separate library. Unfortunately, student laptops and stuff faculty check out can be due on Sunday. Since I only have one circ desk there, I can’t split it out into two libraries. Thank you for the suggestion, though.

You need to create a separate Library in Alma for your Media Center so that it can have its own separate calendar in Alma.

We had to do that at Seattle Central. They had a Media Center inside the library that was closed on weekends. Even though we allowed people to return some things to the main circ desk, we didn't want Media Center items to have a due date when the Media Center was closed.

I've got a checklist of what has to be done when creating a new library. I can share it if that would be helpful.

It will be ok!

Is it possible to have a conditional loan period, meaning the length of the loan depends on the day of the week the item is borrowed?

We have equipment (digital cameras) for students to borrow to complete class assignments. The normal loan period for the cameras is 2 days, so if one is checked out on Monday, it will be due back Wednesday.

However, even though our media center is closed on Saturdays and open on Sundays, the department wants cameras checked out on Thursday or Friday to be due back on Monday (4 or 3 days) rather than Sunday (2 days). Is it possible to have Alma do that automatically or do we need to manually change the due date each time one is checked out on Thursday or Friday?

I couldn’t find anything on the Ex Libris knowledge base about this and there was nothing recent on Alma-L. Any ideas? Thanks.
