[Wactclc-alma] subject heading search

I interpreted the question the same way ☺

And I liked your solution. I didn’t realize (or remember) that the subjects attribute in analytics included all subject headings on a record. That’s very useful.

Also, a related thing of which to be aware, and of which some of you already take advantage…

You can open an SF case to have any MARC field of your choosing (that isn’t already available in analytics) added to analytics as a searchable field. You get up to 10 such custom fields. And could always swap them out over time if you actually came up with more than 10.

So, for example, you could have an analytics attribute set up for the 655 field, so that you could report it out in analytics.

Good point about the genre/subject distinction in the bib records Wade.

I had thought Cara Beth was talking about “Electronic book” subject headings and thought they were trying to find records which only had one subject heading where the subject heading was “Electronic book.” It’s been a long week.

My thought process was, “Well if the records only have one subject heading to begin with, then they’re probably vendor records with poor cataloging, and if that’s the case then the vendor has probably stuck the genre heading in a subject field because their cataloging is so poor.” 😆

Thanks Adrienne for clarifying.

Hi all,

I'll chime in, since I asked Cara Beth in the first place! :)

Thanks so much, Kristi and Wade.

Kristi, I do not know how to do what you described, but I will figure it out if needed. However, I think Wade hit the nail on the head- the titles I double-checked, it was the 655 field that showed Electronic books.

Can I get that field (655) to not show?

Thank you all!

Nice find, Kirsti.

As long as the ‘electronic books’ heading is actually in the subject field, and not in the genre (MARC 655) field, that will work.

The subject search in Alma includes the 655, while the ‘subjects’ field in the bibliographic details area of analytics does not.

Electronic books sounds more like a genre heading than a subject heading to me. If that’s what GHC is searching for, then I don’t think the subjects field in analytics will work for this. Though it is a great option for other use cases.

I’m not sure what the answer is if the target is actually genre rather than subject.

This turned out to be easier than I thought. I thought you’d have to create multiple analyses and filter for MMSIDs or Portfolio IDs not contained in or contained in the other analyses.

Turns out you can do it with 1 analyses just by using the right filter on the Subjects field from the Bibliographic Details folder (which shows up in most of the Alma Analytics subject areas).

The Subjects field contains *all* subject headings in the bib record. If there’s only 1 single subject heading in a bib record, then the Subjects field only has that one subject heading and nothing else.

So create an Alma Analytics report with a filter on the Subjects field like this:

Subjects = Electronic books.

You have to make sure the capitalization matches exactly, and you have to make sure that if your subject heading has a period at the end you include the period in your filter.

Does this make sense?

I had a question from our collections development librarian, Adrienne. She is working on collections for our nursing program for their upcoming accreditation.

Adrienne has found titles with only the subject heading "electronic books" but nothing about the content, and it isn't just the nursing books.

Can the hive mind give us some ideas of a search or a report to find the titles where the ONLY assigned subject heading is "electronic books"?
