[Wactclc-alma] Withdrawing items in batch by scanning barcodes

Hello Everyone,
I don't believe that we maintain any current holdings in WorldCat, if by that you mean uploading our MARC records to OCLC. We don't upload any of our MARC records to OCLC. I have tried using the Search Resource from within the MD Editor in the past. The only two we have on our list is the British Library and WorldCat. The British Library resource works, but WorldCat does not. Whenever I try to do a search, I simply get an error message -
"An error has occurred, please try again later and contact the system administrator." (Z39.50 gate error: Connection rejected by the Z39.50 database server.)
As far as bulk withdrawing goes, I think I will simply continue to withdraw the items one at a time. It seems very time consuming and awkward to set up job, scan in the item and then having to tell Alma that you want that item to be added to a list, and then having to select the list to add the item to. In that amount of time, I could simply key it the barcode, since I don't have a working barcode scanner, and then click on ... and select to withdraw the item. I probably withdrew at least 50+ titles yesterday. I then went into the stacks and pulled over 50+ items to be withdrawn.
I did add number of loans to the analytic report and added the filter 0, rather than what was previously suggested, which was setting last loan to Null. Setting the Number of Loans to 0, significantly shortened the list from over 2600 items to just under 700 items. This shortened list will give us a good place to start, and is more manageable for our small staff. We will still need to go through the collection again, and pull more items based on additional criteria. This is the project I am working over the quarter break, as the faculty librarian will be out on break as well. When the librarian returns, I will be able to return to shelve reading the collection, while pulling items based on condition, superseding editions, etc.
Thank you for your helpful suggestions.
Best,
Colleen

Thanks, Kirsti.
No, we didn’t mention OCLC holdings management.
But good point, if your library is maintaining current holdings in WorldCat, then certainly you should report any withdrawn titles (as opposed to items) to OCLC.

Wade,
I was in another meeting this morning and had to miss the WACTCLC call. Did the withdrawal discussion include a mention of the fact that people should also remove holdings from OCLC WorldCat when they withdraw cataloged items from Alma?

I’ll add this one to today’s meeting notes, but just wanted to highlight for Colleen and others…
If you’re pulling items off the shelf to weed, and can scan the barcodes into a text files, you can run the ‘withdraw items’ job against that file, as follows:
