I recommend coding equipment as "Realia" since that's defined as:

All naturally occurring objects and any other three-dimensional item made or modified by humans that does not fit into any of the other categories. Use for machines, stitchery, clothing, rubber stamps, templates, pattern stencils, alphabets for lettering, shapes for flow charts, jewelry, pottery, musical instruments, fabrics, tools, utensils, sea shells, rocks, holograms, and furniture.

"Kit" has a really specific meaning in cataloging terms and circulating equipment doesn't fit that definition:

Mixture of components from two or more categories (i.e., sound recordings, maps, filmstrips, etc.), no one of which is identifiable as the primary constituent of the item. Also includes the packages of material called laboratory kits, and packages of assorted materials, such as a set of K-12 social studies curriculum material (all books, workbooks, guides, activities, etc.) or packages of educational test materials (tests, answer sheets, scoring guides, score charts, interpretative manuals, etc.).

So set the Type of record in the LDR field as: r - Three dimensional artifact or naturally occurring object
Set the Type of visual material in the 008 field as: r - Realia

You don't really need anything else. :) As Wade suggests, having a template and using the Open Form Editor option in the Metadata Editor makes everything easier.

Thanks for the link to the Resource Type Field rules table Hannah!

You can edit the bib record after you make the quick record to change the LDR and 008 to what you need for whatever resource type you want, though there isn't a good one for equipment (Kit, maybe, or 3D artifact?) - the rules are here https://knowledge.exlibrisgroup.com/Alma/Product_Documentation/010Alma_Online_Help_(English)/010Getting_Started/050Alma_User_Interface_%E2%80%93_General_Information/Searching_in_Alma#Rules_Used_to_Create_the_Resource_Type_Field_MARC_21_KORMARC_and_UNIMARC

If you have a bunch you want to do you can write a normalization rule and do them all at once; with quick cataloged equipment you probably don't care if every position in the LDR and 008 is accurate.

Hi all,

Does anyone know if it's possible make a quick cataloging record be a resource type other than book or article? We have some equipment that was quick cataloged and it's messing with our analytics since the records appear to be books.

Thank you!

Katherine
