Here are some notes I wrote up for folks at my institution who recently asked about new barcode scanners (We use Codabar symbology barcodes):

The cordless scanners typically cost several hundred dollars more that the scanners with cords. For example, the Intermec SG20 with a cord (which is the scanner I have in my office-- I checked my records) usually costs between $150-200. The cordless version costs upwards of $350, not including the $100+ base that you have to buy separately.

The cheapest I can find the corded SG20<https://www.amazon.com/Intermec-SG20T-General-Barcode-interface/dp/B00EUMUMQG/ref=sr_1_9?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1512016675&sr=1-9&keywords=sg20+scanner> scanner on Amazon is $112. The cheapest I can find the the cordless SG20<https://www.amazon.com/Intermec-SG20-General-Duty-Imager/dp/B00B86P2E4/ref=sr_1_36?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1512016758&sr=1-36&keywords=sg20+scanner> is $335-- that doesn't include the base<https://www.amazon.com/Intermec-BB-SG20-002-Bluetooth-High-Performance-Handheld/dp/B01CLEE4EA/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1512019858&sr=1-1&keywords=SG20+base>.

Intermec (now owned by Honeywell) and Symbol (bought by Motorola and now owned by Zebra) are used in a lot of libraries and their scanners hold up for decades. They hold up well even when you drop them a lot, speaking from personal experience. Symbol runs a bit cheaper than Intermec.

Here are the Symbol scanners that (should) support the library barcodes:

DS2278<https://www.amazon.com/Zebra-DS2278-SR-Wireless-Bluetooth-Barcode/dp/B076N6FMFJ/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1512018266&sr=1-1&keywords=DS2278> (wireless) - $286
LI4278<https://www.amazon.com/Formerly-Motorola-Wireless-Barcode-Scanner/dp/B01A4XG9LG/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1512018503&sr=1-2&keywords=LI4278> (wireless) - $208
DS8178-SR<https://www.amazon.com/Zebra-DS8178-SR-Wireless-Bluetooth-DS6878-SR/dp/B076KST5XZ/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1512018592&sr=1-1&keywords=DS8178-SR> (wireless) $526
LS2208<https://www.amazon.com/Symbol-LS2208-General-Handheld-Bi-Directional/dp/B00EUN42SO/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1512018649&sr=1-2&keywords=LS2208> (corded) - $67

One dept. uses a Symbol LS2208. Another dept. uses a WorthData WDP. We have Intermec SG20 scanners (corded) in Library Technical Services and that’s the model that I recently asked Aryana to buy for a staff member at North who had been typing in barcodes by hand because he didn’t have a scanner(!). I helped set up the LS2208 WDP, and SG20 and there wasn’t a big difference in the set up and configuration for any of them. I have a vague memory that the Intermec makes it a bit easier to switch back and forth between including a hard return at the end of the barcode and not including a hard return at the end of the barcode.

All three scanners mentioned above can also be programmed to scan the EAN barcode on the backs of books and output it as an ISBN—very handy.

Subject: [Wactclc-alma] Barcode Scanners

Edmonds will be purchasing about 5 new barcode scanners in the near future. We haven't purchased new scanners in a couple of years.

Have any of you recently purchased new barcode scanners to work with Alma, and if so can you let me know the vendor and model number of the scanners you purchased.

Thanks!
