[Wactclc-alma] Renewal period start date

Just a general note, the concept of circulation renewals requires a bit of a context shift in thinking, relative to how many ILSes handle renewals.

Basically, Alma relies on the concept of a "maximum circulation period", rather than a "maximum number of renewals".

So, regardless of how long an item initially circulates for (2 weeks, 3 weeks, etc), the associated TOU recognizes some maximum amount of time a patron can potentially hold onto that item (say, 6 months).

As long as there are no holds or recalls a given item, and the patron is not otherwise blocked or restricte (say, by their expiration date), they can continue to renew an item until they have held the item for that maximum period (6 months, in this example). Renewals are just how they (or staff) extend the initial checkout period. The patron could renew the item every day for 6 months, if they wanted. Ultimately, they would be limited by that 6 month max, not the number of times they renew.

That's the logical explanation.

Mechanically, that 6 month period is determined by the "maximum renewal period" policy in the TOU.

It turns out my staff was referring to a renewal a few days after the due date, not before. Because of the setting in the maximum renewal period, the item appeared to be renewed from the original due date instead of the renewal date.

Subject: [Wactclc-alma] Renewal period start date

We have discovered that if a student renews a book before the due date, the renewal period is figured from the date of the renewal, not from the original due date which is what was intended.

For example, if a student checks out a book for two weeks on Monday the 1st, it is due on Monday the 15th. If it is renewed on the 15th, it is due two weeks later on Monday the 29th. However, if it is due on the 15th but renewed on Thursday the 11th, the new due date is Thursday the 25th. An early renewal reduces the maximum loan period.

We want an early renewal to take effect as though the item was renewed on its original due date. In Voyager there was a setting to control the date from which a renewal period took effect. Is there a way to control this in Alma?
