Sorry I wasn't clear about the audit! The audit was mainly built to catch the special Native American residency status and with our admissions application. We were working on trying to catch this population prior to the start term, the audit will filter if a student has marked any of the possible residency exceptions. It’s only been active for a year so we are doing our best to filter .

The relevant WAC is WAC 250-18-025(1): Classification procedure:

After a student has registered at any institution, such student's residency classification shall remain unchanged in the absence of evidence of a sufficient quantity and quality to satisfy the institution to the contrary. The provision of such evidence to the contrary may be initiated by the student or the institution.

We don’t typically run such an audit and the general advice we give is that a student will retain their resident classification as long as they remain continuously enrolled.  Under the WAC, however, we could opt to go back and change a student to non-resident.

If we were going to run such an audit, it would be important to recognize that many students will retain resident classification due to any one of the following:

  *   Qualifying under the current affidavit, which only looks at the 12 months immediately prior to the start of their program
  *   Qualifying as a dependent student under a resident parent
  *   Any number of military categories that might fit
  *   Native American residency (for OR, MT, and ID domiciliaries)
  *   Temporary sojourn, such as an internship or study abroad

I’m personally curious how often you run your audit and how many students it identifies for follow-up out of your total student population.

Good morning all,

I have several emails from students who’re disclosing that they’re planning on moving out of state due to buying property or relocating due to employment. One of their main questions are, they’re currently a WA resident and paying in-state tuition, how long does it take for their record to be changed to out of state.

We currently have an audit that will flag students who have an in-state and out of state address on their account, we will work with connecting with the student directly to see if they’re a bona fide WA resident. How does your University handles inquiries from students who may move out of WA.

Any guidance is appreciated!
