<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;color:#1F497D">Like many of us we don’t charge fines/fees for some groups, eg, running start, bfet, international, etc. And after four years we remove all lost items that are attached to a patrons record (we
 absorb the loss).  Frankly, for some items we remove the lost status much sooner, eg, for items that should be withdrawn from the collection or replaced (a good example is TI 83 calculators). Nor do we ever send patrons to collections therefore keeping it
 very low stakes. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;color:#1F497D">What we would like to do is not charge fees/fines to the groups we currently don’t fine PLUS all Pell grant recipients.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;color:#1F497D">Last year, we did away with our punitive fines policy for mostly racial equity reasons at RTC. We found that our fining policy drove a wedge between our students and some of our staff. Anecdotally,
 fines were also disproportionately impacting our students of color on campus, who make up 70% of our student population and most of our borrowers in general. Students have been so much happier with us since we’ve made this change, and have been more communicative
 with us than ever before when they need a renewal.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;color:#1F497D"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;color:#1F497D">Since we got rid of fines, we are being a lot more proactive and forgiving in getting stuff returned. For example, we will text them through our Signal Vine platform a reminder if their item
 has gone into late status. Signal Vine has been a super effective way in getting in touch with our students.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;color:#1F497D">For certain classes like our ESL/ELA ones, we’ve partnered with the instructor to monitor certain limited inventories. If there are books that are extremely late, we mention this generally to
 the instructor and the instructor will remind their class on how to return their books in on time. We also text the students a reminder.
