About the New Faculty Institute
Each year, the Assessment, Teaching, and Learning (ATL) department at SBCTC offers a "New" Faculty Institute. This 2 day event provides participants with multiple opportunities to reflect upon and make intentional changes to how they
* structure their professional identity as two year college faculty members;
* create equitable learning environments where all students have opportunity to thrive.
Many colleges have hired, are hiring, and will continue to hire "new" faculty for tenure-track and one-year replacement positions in all 3 mission areas (academic-transfer, adult basic education, and workforce). Faculty members hired for these instructional leadership positions, no matter how long they have been teaching, no matter what their mission area, will benefit immensely from attending the 2019 NFI.
Purpose of the NFI
The NFI is designed to supplement, complement, and align with campus-level orientations.
At the NFI, participants will not only learn how they play a huge and vital role in "The System," in achieving Executive Director Jan Yoshiwara's system-level goals (there are approximately 11,500 faculty employed by our 34 CTCs), they will experience its very best benefits as they
1. meet other "new" faculty from around the state,
2. learn together about research-based best practices,
3. exchange practical expertise within the context of those frameworks.

Day 1: Core Frameworks
8:30 AM to 9:00 AM Check-in
9:00 AM to 10:30 AM The 4 Connections: Moving from Intuitive to Intentional Practice
Sally Heilstedt, Lake Washington Institute of Technology
Purpose: The primary foundation to creating a learning environment where all students can thrive is forming strong relationships with your students. This session will help you recognize where you are intuitively using research-based best practices and also provide you new ones to try out Fall Quarter 2019!
10:30 AM to 10:45 AM Break
10:45 AM to 12:00 PM The Transparency Framework: Ensuring Your Assignments are Assessments
Martin Cockcroft, Olympic College
Purpose: Building on the rich tradition of “good” assignments as “good” assessments, the Transparency in Learning and Teaching (TILT) Higher Ed provides you research-based tools and strategies. When you “TILT” your assignments, you ensure they
are not just “good assessments,” but equitable ones.
12:00 PM to 1:00 PM Lunch with Disciplinary Colleagues from Around the State
This is a time-honored tradition where you can bond with other “New” Faculty who share your subject matter expertise.
1:00 PM to 2:30 PM Robust Course Level Assessment: The Basics of Closing the Loop
Analea Brauburger, Tacoma Community College
Purpose: There are differences-- BIG differences-- between grading student work and assessing student learning. In addition to providing you with these notable distinctions, this session will provide you with processes you can use right away so you can collect meaningful evidence of student learning on the “front end.” Furthermore, we’ll show you what to do with that evidence once you have it!
2:30 PM to 2:45 PM Break
2:45 PM to 4:00 PM Assignment Charrette: TILT Your First Assignment
2,1,1 TILT Steering Committee: Judy Loveless-Morris, Tacoma; Angela Rasmussen, Spokane; Tsai-En Cheng, Green River; Peg Balachowski, EvCC; Sally Heilstedt, Lake Washington
Purpose: Bring an assignment or classroom activity you teach regularly and participate in an assignment workshop: you will give and receive feedback to help you “TILT” an assignment using the transparent assignment template.
Day 2: Practical Applications

9:00 AM to 10:30 AM Where Am I Going? Concrete Backwards Design Across the Curriculum
Dutch Henry, Shoreline Community College
Purpose: Is “Backwards Design” a simple strategy? “Begin with the End in Mind” is an oft-touted mantra in education. However, it is not always easy. This session will give you practical, hands-on, “concrete” ways to use backwards design to help your
students reach their learning goals and your course outcomes.
10:30 AM to 10:45 AM Break
10:45 AM to 12:00 PM Taking an Equity Lens: Working with Multilingual Speakers on Grammar and Correctness
Tish Lopez, South Seattle College & Ian Sherman, Green River College
Purpose: Every aspect of your classroom, from your learning outcomes to your lesson plans, can and should be approached-- and re-approached again-- with an equity lens. This session will provide an in-depth case study of a way to approach a
commonly taught outcome with an equity lens. See “Correctness” in a whole new way and then think about other areas in your classroom to examine from an equity lens.
12:00 PM to 1:00 PM Administrator Luncheon
Purpose: Enjoy a delicious meal with your college president, vice-president, and/or deans at this time-honored tradition that many participants say is the highlight of the NFI.
1:00 PM to 2:15 PM Bringing It All Together: Teacher Exemplar
Erin Huebener, Spokane Community College
Purpose: Learn how one faculty member used the 4 Connections, TILT, and Open Educational Resources (OERS) to overhaul her course and collect evidence of student learning using Canvas Analytics. You’ll also gain an in-depth exploration of
“practice paradox”: while the course was more rigorous in the “After” version, the student success outcomes improved.
2:15 PM to 3:00 PM Active Application: Planning Your First Year
Peg Balachowski, Everett Community College
Purpose: You’ve learned a lot about creating equitable learning environments where all students can learn deeply and succeed: the 4 Connections, the Transparency Framework, Backwards Design, Applying an Equity Lens, and OERs. Now enjoy
guided planning time to bring it all together! One-to-one coaching with our resource faculty available.
