Gerry,

Thank you for organizing the event. In your previous correspondence, you had asked about coming up with ideas for working with lawmakers regarding issues important to us, and I would like to share the following issues with FACTC's colleagues for future discussions:

1) In our last FACTC meeting, SBCTC presented data on poor college completion across the USA - roughly 50% college drop out rate. If I remember correctly, we were told that the state of Tennessee since started making education in community and tech colleges free (or almost free) has seen a 10% increase in college attainment. Given this high rate of success over a short period of few years, why shouldn't we replicate a similar model of low-cost education in WA? If we cannot make an across the board switch to a complete free college education, there are certain aspects of the system that we can modify through the help received from legislators for increasing college attainment. For example, I am working as our biology coordinator for college in the high school program (CHS), and there are many 9th graders who have strong science background and the desire to take college credit courses but are not allowed to enroll in the CHS due to the state laws. At the same time, the state law allows for the 9th grade students to enroll in the Running Start program.

2) Salaries do not match the high cost of living. This is a major concern for Bellevue College employees. I was talking to a real state agent friend who mentioned that the average real state property is $ 950,000 on the Eastside (Seattle suburbs east of Lake WA) where Bellevue College is located. Seattle average is also very high at about $750,000. Given the disparity between the high cost of living and our salaries, what legislative changes can be made to address this issue.

Looking forward to see everyone,

Reza

Hello FACTC,

I've finally gotten a room to meet and a place for us to eat, and have invited some legislators from the 49th and 17th districts to join us for dinner. Hopefully one of them will find time.

We will be dinning on May 4th from 6:15-8:00 pm at Warehouse 23, on the banks of the Columbia River, 100 Columbia St. #102, Vancouver WA 98660
http://www.warehouse1923.com/ We will have a continental breakfast starting an 7:45 on May 5th catered by Say-Ciao: http://say-ciao.com/

The meeting will be in Gaiser Hall 205, just down the hall from where we met last time. I've included a campus map and a building map. Park in Green Lot 1 or Green Lot 2. No parking permit is needed, but don't park in F/S spaces.

Please let me know if you plan to telecommute, so I can get the tech set up.
