<div>Good Morning,</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Here is the message I’ve sent out to my college in recognition of Orange Shirt Day! Please modify and use as you see fit. We bought & distributed Orange shirts to staff, faculty and some students to honor this day!</div>
<div><font face="Calibri" size="2"><span style="font-size:11pt"> </span></font></div>
<div>In 2013, September 30 was established as Orange Shirt Day. This day was created to honor Native American and Indigenous boarding school survivors, descendants and deceased students and was designed in recognition of the harm that the Native American and
Indigenous boarding school system did to generations of Native American and Indigenous families and communities.
</div>
<div> </div>
<div>There is a long generational impact that the residential boarding and industrial schools have had on the Native American and Indigenous community. These schools that were created by the federal government and religious missionaries were designed to assimilate
Native American and Indigenous children into Western culture, and to eradicate the practice of their traditional culture, language and ceremony.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>The Carlisle Indian Industrial School (Carlisle) in Carlisle, PA was the model for 26 other schools in the U.S. Founded on the motto “Kill the Indian, save the man,” Carlisle was the flagship Indian boarding school in the United States from 1879 through
1918. During this time, Native American and Indigenous children were transferred from mission schools to Industrial schools. More than 10,000 Native American and Indigenous students from 140 Tribes attended, 158 graduated, and more than 180 children died while
at Carlisle. </div>
<div> </div>
<div>September 30 is known as Orange Shirt Day after former student Phyllis (Jack) Webstad shared her story of her first day at boarding school in which her favorite orange shirt was taken away.
</div>
<div>This year, LWTech will also honor Orange Shirt Day. </div>
<div><font face="Calibri" size="2"><span style="font-size:11pt"> </span></font></div>
<div>We are asking everyone who can and who has one, to wear an orange shirt either Thursday or Friday of this week to honor this day.
</div>
<div><font face="Calibri" size="2"><span style="font-size:11pt"> </span></font></div>
<div>Last year The Office of EDI, the Foundation and the Office of Student Life partnered with Indigenous Educator and business owner Marysa Joy Sylvester of the Tulalip and Quileute Tribes to help us honor Orange Shirt Day as one of our first institutional
efforts to move beyond Land Acknowledgements and a few Orange Shirts were made available.
</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Marysa states, “Every Child Matters is written to honor those who lost their lives in such a terrible way, and to remind people that every child who went missing was somebodies everything. It is our responsibility to remember them, honor them and share
their truths.”</div>
