<p><span style="font-size:12.0pt">Why are we doing this again? Why are we still here? Why is another family burying another Black man? We are tired of saying their names. When will we, as a society, decide that it is enough and take serious action to ensure
 NO MORE?! Tyre Nichols, like Keenan Anderson, like Eric Holmes, like Ki’Azia Miller, like James Wilborn, like Manuel Ellis, like George Floyd, had his whole life ahead of him. Why was his life, his brilliance, stolen by people in a job, paid for by tax dollars,
 people who say they are there to protect and serve?</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:12.0pt">Far too often, we face police brutality with the loss of another Black life. The heinous approach these officers took to subdue Tyre, who wasn’t resisting, showcases a foundation of behavior that has gone on for too long in
 police departments across this nation. This is not about a few bad apples. It’s time for us all to recognize that this is systemic. People who choose to become law enforcement officers, should not be given the right to be judge, jury, and executioner. What
 happened to due process? Or is that only a right for some? </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:12.0pt">What are we going to do about this system? This system that allows bad behavior, protects it behind the “blue wall”, and punishes those who do try to do right. How does that even make sense? As Al Sharpton said, “We’re not
 anti-police, we’re anti-police brutality.” Where is the accountability for the systemic abuse of power? Too few police officers and organizations are held accountable.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:12.0pt">Experiencing this as a nation reminds us why our work is extremely important and is needed now more than ever. The Office of Equity is taking action to advance

belonging</a>, the concept developed by the Othering & Belonging Institute. Through our systems and actions we either show people they are an other, or they belong. We must work together to ensure violence like this is uprooted from our collective consciousness.
 It’s not only the work of police departments; it’s the work we can all participate in by being examples of what it looks like to move with love toward all people. According to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., “Unconditional love will have the final word in reality.”

<p><span style="font-size:12.0pt">We know it is time for government to demonstrate the reality that every Washingtonian belongs here. Our country has created and dealt with enough examples of hate. It’s time we make loving one another a real pillar of our common
 culture. Through belonging we can create a world where an act like this is not routine or ordinary for future generations. We are here to rebuild government systems upon a foundation of pro-equity and anti-racism in accordance with
