Hi Hanan and John—

We had 7 responses and folks gave some good updates to share. You're welcome to keep adding responses (I get a notification each time) and I'll forward what y'all send and share the summary that will be sent back to ways and means.

I thank you all for the prayers and well wishes as I spent time with my lola (grandmother) last month. She hung on while we were there and we got to celebrate three birthdays (including my own). There's no other what that four generations of family would have been able to gather otherwise.

I got news that lola passed late last night, on the birthday of my aunt who has been one of her caretakers. My mom had fed her, went out to get groceries for a buerhdsy meal for my aunt, and she was gone. My youngest sister is flying back tomorrow morning to help with funeral service and arrangements.

I hope and pray for good health and wholeness for you and your families, both chosen and created.

happy new year all,

sophia ✨

Hello Everyone.

I'm coming to this a bit late as an accident over break has left me without the use of one arm as I await surgery. I can have the survey-looking version of this ready to send tomorrow.

Thanks,

John

Hi Vanessa--

Stephanie didn't reach out directly to the DEOC because when the question came to her from the ways and means fiscal analyst, she emailed me and Paul asking for examples. I made the suggestion to reach out to the DEOC, so I thought a survey would be easier for you all to submit information. She then said she would also reach out to operating budget folks at each of the institutions, to which I said was fine, but there isn't always good communication/sharing across the roles, so reaching out to both would give a more holistic perspective.

I noted in the survey that Stephanie would be reaching out to the operating budget folks, and I also know it seems duplicative depending on your college, so if you believe you or your operating budget person has all the info about EDI investments coming from the one-time money that was released this summer, then only one needs to submit that info.

I made the case that this last minute, end of year request didn't feel appropriate, so Paul said we could go back to ways and means to say people are already out and to extend that deadline from January 3 to later that week. I haven't received confirmation on that correspondence, but I imagine that's why Stephanie set the deadline to January 2, to gather the responses and prepare them to be sent by the original January 3 request.

Hope that's helpful! I've pasted the original request from the leg below for reference.

Hi Stephanie –

Last session, the Legislature provided $12M one-time in 2023-25 for DEI investments. I’ve been asked for an update on this.

  * For FY 24, how was the funding allocated? How much has each college received?
  * How has the funding been spent so far? What projects or initiatives are colleges working on? Please provide a few examples.

Please provide the information by Wednesday, January 3. Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks.

Michele

Thanks for the follow-up, Sophia.

I’m not sure if you all are aware – but the Operating Budget Director of SBCTC also sent this request directly to our VP of Ops, so I’m wondering how many folx at each institution are working to submit this information. Sophia, is there a way you can check with Stephanie Winner to see how far this request went, and why it didn’t just come directly to the DEOC?

Thanks,

Vanessa

Hi Consuelo--

I hear that and I asked the same thing especially if requests like this are something I should be anticipating and can plan for. The response I got today from Paul was:

"We periodically receive questions from legislative staff regarding updates on prior legislative investments/legislation. It’s usually spurred by a legislator who inquires. I sent many similar requests to the SBCTC during my time as legislative staff. Sharing any pertinent reports to the legislature can be valuable, too. We may get asked to provide a verbal update during a legislative work session, too."

I also asked why we were being asked for an update when the money was just released late this summer and some folks at least in the DEOC are stil unsure of how much money they (and others at their colleges) have to work with and/or that four months isn't a whole lot of time to get things off the ground or to expand existing programming, staffing, or resources.

Please know I pushed back and I put the request out knowing that folks are already out of office and that I would get what I would get, given this late request.

I hear you and feel you.

sophia

Hi. I logged in today only to help finalize a matter that I promised would be resolved. Our college is closed, and I am on vacation as is most of the college.

I need to push back on this request as this is coming at one of the few times people can take actual breaks on our campuses and is not sufficient time to address the questions being asked. Additionally, with the fiscal year not being over, I'm wondering why we are being asked this now. This sense of urgency on our positions feels intrusive and counterintuitive to the culture we keep saying we want.

Any insight you can provide after the first of the year will be greatly appreciated. And, if you can pass on my feedback to those that need it will be helpful.

Thanks.

Consuelo

Dear DEOC--

I have a request that just came in today about the one-time DEI legislative investment that was awarded in the last session.

To make it easier to collect responses, I've created a brief survey that I'm asking you to please fill out if you're in the office: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/R8FWNKJ

See the original email below and reach out via email, text, or call if you have questions. They have requested this information be sent back to them by January 3. I was hoping to collect and format the responses before sending it to Stephanie in our office.

peace,

sophia
