Thanks for sharing, Jo Ann. So timely given the discussion and concerns about the growing anti-DEI legislation across the nation at ATD this last week. Per the DEI Legislation Tracker<https://www.chronicle.com/article/here-are-the-states-where-lawmakers-are-seeking-to-ban-colleges-dei-efforts?emailConfirmed=true&supportSignUp=true&supportForgotPassword=true&email=hnguyen%40pierce.ctc.edu&success=true&code=success&bc_nonce=0bdxdslrwiuuxf3w0oukq> dated today, 76 anti-DEI bills have been introduced in 26 states. They vary in their restrictions, i.e. outlawing mandatory DEI trainings, eliminating DEI offices, etc.

Although very glad to be working in a state that passed pro-DEI legislation coupled with some fiscal investments, I'd also echo the sentiments from colleagues at other pro-DEI states that the growth and momentum of the anti-DEI legislation across the nation leaves me feeling a bit anxious. As we consider the legislative priorities for the next biennium, I'm hoping Pierce College District and the WA CTC system stands firm in its commitment to accelerate our racial equity work by supporting the extension of the DEI one-time funding monies.

Best,
Ha

When asked whether the establishment of DEI offices in public institutions and private businesses make the state better or worse, 45% of respondents said DEI programs have had a positive impact on Utah, 24% said the effect on the state has been negative, 17% said DEI offices haven't made a difference one way or the other and 13% said they didn't know.

Despite the favorable connotation associated with words like "diversity" and "inclusion," DEI has become a flashpoint in the national culture war, with outright bans on DEI funding or hiring requirements on university campuses recently becoming law<https://email.deseret.com/e3t/Ctc/ZU+113/d11t9n04/VVCc8h8Xxm5JW3jQxTC7CPMqTW8mS6hr59T6WDN6J4pXH7mmzdW5BWSxg6lZ3p5W3JrsNM74BFr9W8VRMm75wKPKwN6_7km6zXTNTW4_jF196M110RW5GzTpM3F000HVt-FKY2SbWfFW8NLVnT6Cm4MFVGlqfN9gGS31N9b3mVhT_vSzW3tZ30c7TZGzrW5g6rzM6B77lCN2zG_Sh_1XHJW47V3S53Mr5BDW959PF-8DTpLBVBdwcg31V41dW2HV6Zx3cfQ17Vf6lNw3lT-44W8zPc244W5p_yW4bQPqk8-H9YvW1_VKDC2_XhDfW7b4bjk80nFcGN3h6M7Vb7XLBW6mZ_k186Z8CDW1LmBxZ1SjNqFW3hrK1K957zSKW4MtH801WzSzlW5DDpbr4GYdPSW3B5dxJ7xQZ-RW8kffPD1pMVlHVQxKvc21L9vXW44T7DC4hr9H0N7J6CfTlf58pW1yD6Tr4WM3qJW6LLCtJ51tKfzW18RPG57bp8wWN7PjLxbWyCdCW2PThpy5B34l9W1X6CVv77KW8DW3T-vzb5102WQW2lbZNN6BpF0rW2lXrg-4NGsBlW8wsssL3NQ1wfN70-vPBdwY0HW2jLyGd829FxmW8rBKTJ3M4nXtW7vm2055bzqWjW8T1Y868yC5qtW4ykGXq7QwG8dN9949h_Dr-K8W2KLMmt5xG3lzf5HP4Rs04> in several states.

"The biggest issue with DEI now, and its messaging, is it makes it seem like race is to determine your outcome in life," Keimon Dixson said.

Utah's new DEI bill was signed into law by Utah Gov. Spencer Cox on Jan. 30. It will outlaw DEI trainings, requirements, programs and offices at public universities, schools "or any other institution of the state" that engages in what the legislation calls "prohibited discriminatory practices."
