Hi Thalia and Joe and All,
I want to clarify that MSSDC is one of the many councils that sit under WSSSC<https://www.sbctc.edu/colleges-staff/commissions-councils/wsssc/>, which is the commission for VPs of Student Services of the 34 community and technical colleges. It’s important to understand the difference between councils and commissions<https://www.sbctc.edu/colleges-staff/commissions-councils/>. The commissions are made up of Vice Presidents or executive cabinet members. Most councils are made up of Directors/Deans. For example, the DEOC is a commission just like WSSSC and Instruction Commission<https://www.sbctc.edu/colleges-staff/commissions-councils/ic/> (IC). Commissions are made up of mostly executive cabinet members.

The conversation we had at the last meeting was about implications of transitioning MSSDC from WSSSC to us (DEOC), not to merge. Most commissions have multiple councils under them. Some councils have liaisons from commissions. For example, MSSDC has a liaison from WSSSC, SBCTC and DEOC (me). My role is to represent the DEOC at MSSDC which why I was asking for guidance from the whole commission vs. my personal opinions.

I hope that helps clarify.

Also, for supporting Linda Sasour:
If 20 of us support with 250 dollars = $5000
If 10 of us support with 500 dollars = $5000

The best way would be for each of us to get an invoice for the amount (either 250 or 500) and then a check can be written to MSSDC.

That’s my suggestion.

Thanks,
Maribel

MSSCD is the acronym for Home | Multicultural Student Services Directors' Council (mssdc.com)<https://www.mssdc.com/>. SOCC is the Students Of Color Conference Washington | Facebook<https://www.facebook.com/soccWA/>.

At the end of the last day of our retreat, we briefly discussed merging our groups. Maribel sits on both our commission and their council The first email is her report back to the DEOC with some action items. You ere absent, therefore it makes sense you need clarification. 😊

Joe, I’m with you. Lean in for support. 😊

I also support meeting with MSSCD in the spring. I think I can assist with a proposal. Yvonne

Weighing in on the asks:

I support meeting with MSSDC in spring. I think we can also help support funding Linda Sasour – I’m not sure of the mechanics of doing that though.

And finally, I have no capacity to do a workshop proposal, but I am happy to be on a workshop panel at SOCC to talk with students. I’m hoping others can step up to create the proposal?

Thank you

Consuelo

Hi Fam,

Attached are the meeting notes from the MSSDC meeting I attended at Yakima Valley College Nov. 15-17, 2023.

I want to focus your attention to the asks from MSSDC:

  * Requesting in Spring (Skagit Valley College) meeting together with DEOC for clarification of roles and how to work together

  * Continue to advocate for a representative from your college to join the MSSDC<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1yyhBOUGjBnJG7_CcCy3lAcspjfmdIvOfTYIiRxu9T1k/edit*gid=0__;Iw!!CVJAgw2XxpAa!hFslgyyIxBjsEN1eZVejafUJq7yofkNV_G4sOh2CcSi_P919xObd-E2-xzv0bklDHhLKOKmEwesXhYivig$> if you don’t have one
  * Asking for help for funding Linda Sasour for SOCC, can DEOC sponsor part of her fee? $5000
  * Student safety support, MSSDC is in the process of crafting a letter/statement about safety of Muslim students on campuses across the community college system
  * If no MSSDC representative from your college, can DEOC member recommend a contact for SOCC information to go to? If so send name to Edwina Fui efui at highline.edu<mailto:efui at highline.edu>
  * Encouraging DEOC to share their expertise with students by giving a workshop at SOCC Workshop Proposal Form: 34th Annual Students of Color Conference (google.com)<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdoam6ReAYHRIdPljEb568scPOGKonpqxVX8UADlnAviY6hIg/viewform__;!!CVJAgw2XxpAa!hFslgyyIxBjsEN1eZVejafUJq7yofkNV_G4sOh2CcSi_P919xObd-E2-xzv0bklDHhLKOKmEweuCanRNdg$>

Open to discussion about how we work through the asks.

Have a great week.
