Hi all!
We have one of our Associate Deans for Student Support Programs also as a Tribal Liaison. However, I don’t like that model, as this work needs 100% commitment from our institution. So some of the things I am working on along with our Tribal Liaison are:

  * Building an Elder in Residence program. The job description I have looks like this but still working on it. It will start as a part-time and we would have an Elder from our Swinomish Indian Tribal Community on our campus.

Summary
Skagit Valley College is looking for an Elder-In-Residence. The position is designed to foster cultural, academic, social, and spiritual support for Native students and enrich the campus community. The Elder- in Residence will engage with the SVC campus through various programs, including holding office hours, working with students, working on a specialized project, and giving public talks.
Elder-In-Residence
Description:

  1. chosen for their deep cultural knowledge and their leadership in Native causes

  1. foster cultural, academic, social, and spiritual support for SVC students as well as to enrich the campus community

  1. meet with students, speak in classrooms, and meet with other campus faculty and staff

  1. The EIR Program is designed to:

  * Celebrate and perpetuate the practices of traditional ecological knowledge (TEK)
  * Validate Indigenous practices and ways of knowing,
  * Reinforce American Indian/Alaskan Native identity and affirm Native students,
  * Raise the awareness of Native culture with SVC staff, faculty, and students
  * Foster relationships between American Indian/Alaskan Native communities and SVC

  1. Duties include:

  * Holding office hours for Native student mentoring, projects, and consultation
  * Supporting faculty members in their teaching
  * Joining monthly faculty and student lunches
  *   Meeting with Native parents

  * Hosting informative events to grow awareness of issues important to Indigenous Peoples in local, national, and global contexts
  * Creating “take-home” projects for the high school and college Native student cohorts
  * Visiting classrooms and giving talks
  * Meeting with district staff, admin, and teachers
  * Helping with community outreach events

  * Planning and implementing field trips to important “traditional ecological knowledge” areas

  * I am also working with the VP of Instruction to see if I can have some of the faculty conversion dollars to create a full time tenure track position.

Hope this is helpful!
Yadira

Good Afternoon Everyone,

Do any of you have Tribal Liaison’s or individuals doing that work on your campuses? Do you have job descriptions you can share?

Thanks,
