I'm still working toward a better understanding of accessibility issues in math equations as well.

Hi All,

I just tested it a bit with ChromeVox, the screen reader embeded in Chrome OS (on Chromebooks), and while the screen reader reads the equation, it doesn't read it quite the same as we would. I entered KE=½mv2
and ChromeVox said "LaTeK: K E equal backslash f r a c left brace 1 right brace left brace 2 right brace mv squared"  If someone who used the screen reader understood the descriptive nature of the reader they could understand the equation.  I tried another y=(x+3)2 and ChromeVox read "LaTeX: y equal backslash left x plus 3 backslash right squared" which is not quite the same.

>From what I've looked at, WAMAP uses MathML as their equation editor, Canvas uses LaTeX.  Both are supposed to be accessible according to what I've read.  I haven't had the opportunity to test it, yet.

Hi Marissa,

Good question!

I *think* they are accessible. Here's a resource on math accessibility from Penn State<http://accessibility.psu.edu/software/canvas/canvasmath/> that says the equation editor writes math using LaTeX, which is accessible. But, it looks like they use Mathjax to ensure accessibility... so... maybe the Canvas equation editor gets it's halfway there.

Hm... let see if someone else chimes in and I'll forward it on to some math a11y experts I know. :)
