<span style="font-size:18.0pt">This poster presents a research project out of the University of Edinburgh studying cross-communication between autistic and neurotypical people, compared to same-type communication; that is, communication between autistic to
autistic individuals and between neurotypical to neurotypical individua</span><span style="font-size:13.5pt">ls. Through conversations and social exercises, the researchers identified the following regarding autistic social communication.</span></p>

<span style="font-size:13.5pt">Information sharing can break down when pairs are from different neurotypes — when there is an autistic and a non-autistic person.</span></li><li class="x_MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in; font-size: 11pt; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;">
<span style="font-size:13.5pt">Autistic people have higher rapport with other autistic people, and non-autistic people have higher rapport with non-autistic people.</span></li><li class="x_MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in; font-size: 11pt; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;">
<span style="font-size:13.5pt">External observers can detect the lack of rapport apparent in mixed interactions (interactions between autistic and non-autistic pairs).</span></li></ul>

<span style="font-size:18.0pt">Thinking about what that means if you're a neurotypical instructor or advisor, or counselor, or staff in any campus office or department, working with neurodivergent students: neurotypical and neurodivergent people experience
many misunderstandings and because of the way Autism and other ND conditions have been defined in the past, both groups assume that these miscommunications and misunderstandings happen because of a deficit in neurodivergent people. </span></p>
