Hi CATO!

At our last meeting we discussed DOJ's proposed updates to the 504 Regulations about web/mobile accessibility and how this may impact or benefit us in higher education.

AHEAD is hosting a webinar on this topic next week on August 30 at 10am PST and the organization plans to submit comments to the DOJ. This could be an opportunity for our group to join forces and submit our comments to be included with AHEAD's comments. The deadline for submission is October 3rd.

I plan to attend and really hope I'll see others from CATO there too! LMK if you register.

The 504 Regulations were first implemented in 1978, and though much has changed in the world since then, the federal requirements for digital accessibility have not kept up. The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has just announced new proposed regulations affecting web and mobile app accessibility<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=0013_fuUA1NAOUXXwMnvXvA0JTgCr3l2ICka69TRbQYwMATrNlvY23qpE1YnKar7H30l1AkzmfghbgPWhIKHkbGzzL7pjl8rAK-Zru5pthoexGTW16qSP2kObEixmJL0_5N36dRLIBSmxmT76X7UgtVraWl5_IZ2hDVMRUueW7qXAahI4U2k1qiJJLpraZb-mNz&c=rnBMNhmAhBa_3iFvWYGZ3avFSeshrIZUXOwu3v0SGFNCNw7ZZfX8Fg==&ch=NbrXtAzFXVh0I5Vu6_F5jWP02E3yvBVT19OiuFz88D-CPkqmfx44Kw==__;!!PvDODwlR4mBZyAb0!Swj2GZ4SUMsSzoKBJRIrplNucDkTFegaddYeZkIoKkcQdzYnaAy2hJy86-ustDFXKuJiT-5WSpS2E7E$> for public institutions. Once final, these will become mandatory standards for digital access for those entities.

Before the proposed regulations become final, the DOJ provides a 60-day period for the general public to provide input about the proposed regs. This is your chance to have your voice heard in creating federal access requirements!

To give us all the opportunity to become well-informed commenters, on Wednesday, August 30, at 1 PM Eastern AHEAD is offering a free webinar, open to anyone, in which an expert panel will describe:

  * What the proposed new mandatory default standard—WCAG 2.1 level AA—requires
  * What is exempted from the default standard, what are the limits to those exemptions, and what might be required in the alternative
  * Why the new proposed new standards apply only to public institutions, but why private institutions are likely to be impacted by these standards in the long run
  * What is good about the proposed regulations, what’s not so good, and how they might be improved
  * How to participate in the comment process to give AHEAD and the DOJ your input about the proposed changes

When you are ready, you may submit your comments in two ways:

  * AHEAD will be submitting comments to the DOJ as an organization. If you would like to tell AHEAD what you think it should include, please comment in this form [embed link to Alchemer form into “please comment in this form”] no later than September 6.
  * Anyone may directly submit comments to the DOJ<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=0013_fuUA1NAOUXXwMnvXvA0JTgCr3l2ICka69TRbQYwMATrNlvY23qpE1YnKar7H30Hm0C2wp0cAehwJ4-BSXdXtqikaPpU5G4WYD3iLgQTu09fDalQKvBiIoxoIHKUPKpVf-otqCH4KW4hqFafXow3fMiQIxAaTOw_fvEgyNCEPGGFkqvIzA9X250_C6mP1qig-btSW7sKwM=&c=rnBMNhmAhBa_3iFvWYGZ3avFSeshrIZUXOwu3v0SGFNCNw7ZZfX8Fg==&ch=NbrXtAzFXVh0I5Vu6_F5jWP02E3yvBVT19OiuFz88D-CPkqmfx44Kw==__;!!PvDODwlR4mBZyAb0!Swj2GZ4SUMsSzoKBJRIrplNucDkTFegaddYeZkIoKkcQdzYnaAy2hJy86-ustDFXKuJiT-5WwdPL-7o$> on behalf of yourself or your institution by October 3.

You are encouraged to invite other campus colleagues involved with digital access, such as IT, procurement, alt media, instructional design/support, and others, to join this free webinar to learn about the upcoming changes to the regulations. A recording will be made available after the webinar for those who cannot attend live.

Just as it’s important to be an informed voter, it’s important to be an informed “commenter.” Register for the free webinar<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=0013_fuUA1NAOUXXwMnvXvA0JTgCr3l2ICka69TRbQYwMATrNlvY23qpE1YnKar7H30QMDFHe1Fo2KMg6P3QiLuG-lwk9EuAhFkr7pkCWRC_hLdUDkY0LLY9v7Zp3bQdyz1nZImi_3es4zcKsHq8dg0bZCcDSYzxd7KaoZIZ1AFzj5RkUxZCQd5w14URGE1_eQIHlJsmvxJ-mU=&c=rnBMNhmAhBa_3iFvWYGZ3avFSeshrIZUXOwu3v0SGFNCNw7ZZfX8Fg==&ch=NbrXtAzFXVh0I5Vu6_F5jWP02E3yvBVT19OiuFz88D-CPkqmfx44Kw==__;!!PvDODwlR4mBZyAb0!Swj2GZ4SUMsSzoKBJRIrplNucDkTFegaddYeZkIoKkcQdzYnaAy2hJy86-ustDFXKuJiT-5WJn6aNV8$> to hear from these knowledgeable experts, and then provide your feedback on the regulations!
